Dalton swims to two wins

Area roundup

By Adam Krohn

Temperatures may have been in the mid-30s on Tuesday night, but that didn’t prevent Dalton High from heating up in its latest swim meet.

The Dalton High boys and girls swim teams both moved to 6-1 on the season by winning a three-way meet they hosted. The Catamounts scored 131 points to beat Cleveland (85) and Ringgold (82) and the Lady Cats also had 131 points to hold off Cleveland (110) and blow Ringgold (41) out of the water.

Coach Charles Todd was pleased with the times of his swimmers as they qualified for the end-of-the-year state meet in 10 different events, including the boys’ and girls 200-yard medley relay team (1:47.10, 2:04.04, respectively), Omar Farag (200 individual medley, 2:08.67 and 100 butterfly, 55.74), Stephen Jones (50 freestyle, 23:34), Chase Hair (1-meter diving, 203.25 points), Brandt Tharpe (500 freestyle, 5:23.8) and Rebecca Davis (100 breastroke, 1:15.56). All finished first place in their respective events except the boys’ 200 freestyle, which took second.

“I’m really proud of the kids,” Todd said. “They swam real well. We’re kind of broken down right now because we’ve been training real early lately. We had practice at 5:30 and 7:30 this morning and for the kids to come out and get their state cuts, I’m really pleased with it. We just need to stay focused and train hard.

“Cleveland is a strong team and Ringgold had some strong swimmers, they just don’t have a lot of depth, so our depth and speed prevailed.”

Besides the state qualifiers, other Dalton swimmers taking firsts were Maddie Scarborough (200 freestyle, 2:13.02), Erin Hullender (girls 1-meter diving, 57.25), Joana Rosales (100 freestyle, 58.62), Austin Mobley (100 breastroke, 1:10.75), the girls 200 freestyle relay (1:51.42) and the boys 400 freestyle relay (3:43.42).
