Seventy ultra runners are scheduled to compete in the inaugural Georgia Jewel 100K and 50K races Saturday in Dalton.

The races, which will start and end at 1104 Redwine Cove Road, will be run through pastures and forests on 5,000 acres of privately owned land. Runners will follow single- and double-track trails on a 15-mile loop that includes elevation changes, water crossing, and scenic hilltops.

The races begin at 7 a.m. The 100K competitors have up to 18 hours to complete the course; 50k competitors have 15. Aid stations and comfort stations will be located throughout the course to assist the competing athletes.

“We are excited to offer this unique venue for our runners and look forward to a successful day,” Georgia Jewel promoter Karen Pearson said in a release from the Dalton Convention and Visitors Bureau. “Having had a successful 100-mile race on the Pinhoti Trail last fall, we are excited to return with this new event in 2012.”

“Economic impact for this event will generate over $5,000 for the Dalton area,” DCVB Executive Director Brett Huske said. “This event is another in the long line of athletic events we have in the Dalton area for visitors and residents alike.”
