Area middle school roundup: Cougars, Lady Pioneers ahead of the pack

Dalton’s boys and North Whitfield’s girls were the top teams during the Carpet Capital Cross Country Kickoff Meet for middle school teams on Tuesday at Edwards Park in Varnell.

The first-place Cougars finished with 31 points to come in ahead of Westside (56) and New Hope (67), while the Lady Pioneers (44) outdid Westside (49) and Dalton (59).

Dalton’s boys were led by a 1-2 individual finish on the two-mile course from Adan Rodriguez (13 minutes, 25 seconds) and Ezequiel Hernandez (13:26).

Runners tackled numerous hills in shaded woods on the second mile of the race after taking on a flat but sunny first mile. The race finished with a 50-meter uphill sprint.

Rounding out the top 10 boys were Westside’s Andrew Ashe (13:48) and Brandon Rittenhouse (14:11), New Hope’s David Hutchinson (14:15), Valley Point’s Jacob Brock (14:33), New Hope’s Carlos Martinez (14:38), Dalton’s Miguel Guzman (14:39) and Austin Burt (14:45), and New Hope’s Rogelio Conteras (15:05).

Westside’s Reagan Guess (14:35) was the top girl, but North Whitfield took the next two places thanks to Rachel Ward (14:42) and Erin Nelson (14:44).

Rounding out the top 10 girls were New Hope’s Kate Roberts (14:55), Westside’s Lindsey Guess (15:13), Miriam Burnette (15:21), who ran independently, Dalton’s Leah Shelton (15:41) and Grace Anderson (15:54), North Whitfield’s Evy Mulkey (16:07) and Christian Heritage’s Kailee Tipton (16:13), who also competed without the benefit of a team.

• Gladden’s softball team opened its season and North Georgia Middle School Athletic League play on Monday with an 8-3 victory at Valley Point.

Attie Ridley went 3-for-3 with a double to lead the Lady Warriors, while teammate Lind-sey Adams was 3-for-4. The winning pitcher was Kacie Ausmus, who allowed a pair of earned runs on four hits and three walks while striking out 10.
