The Dalton State College men’s tennis team swept doubles play and split in singles to take a 6-3 win over Tennessee Wesleyan College on Sunday at Lakeshore Park. The women’s team lost four of six singles matches to fall to Tennessee Wesleyan, 6-3.
“It was a solid win for the team today,” Dalton State coach Michel Bates said of the Roadrunner’s victory. “We came out and took control of the match early getting all three doubles points. (No. 1 doubles team) Nik (Nikiforav) and Adam (Hornby) brought the same intensity to their singles matches and locked up the final two points for the team in convincing fashion.”
Singles victories for the men came from No. 1 Nikiforav, 6-1, 6-2, No. 3 Hornby, 6-2, 6-2, and No. 5 David Draghicenau, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3. Doubles victories came from Nikiforov and Hornby, 8-5 in proset play, No. 2 Lucas Souza and Juan Arguello, 8-6, and No. 3 Hadyn Fava and Draghicenau, 8-3.
The Roadrunners improved to 11-3.
The Dalton State women took singles wins from No. 4 Diana Narino, 6-2, 6-2, and No. 5 Alejandra Bejarano, 6-0, 6-4, and the doubles victory was from No. 2 Daniella Sanchez and Narino, 8-1.
“The women struggled today, not to take anything away from Tennessee Wesleyan’s team,” Bates said. “Tennessee Wesleyan’s women’s team is very talented; we just didn’t play our best match today. I hope we take this loss, learn from it, and turn it into a positive. This is a great group of young ladies and I have no doubt that we will bounce back from this loss.”
The next match for the men’s team is Thursday against Young Harris at Lakeshore Park at 2 p.m. The women return to action on Saturday as both teams host Georgia Gwinnett at 10 a.m. and Martin Methodist at 1 p.m.
