North Murray boys 2, Cartersville 1: Alexis Solorzano put the Mountaineers ahead, and Manuel Gonzalez made sure it was for good.

North Murray (7-1, 7-0 Region 5-3A) stayed atop the region standings by passing a tough test against the visiting Purple Hurricanes, who are ranked ninth in eurosportscoreboard.com’s Class 3A poll.

Freddy Urbina set up Solorzano’s go-ahead goal in the 60th minute — the score was tied 1-all at halftime — and Gonzalez, who finished the night with six saves, earned Mountaineers coach Matt Chambers with his performance the rest of the way.

“He made some key saves the last 10 minutes of the game, when they were pushing everybody up,” Chambers said. “So it was pretty impressive. He stepped up and kept it clean for us.”

The Mountaineers took the lead less than four minutes into the match when Raul Rodriguez assisted on Jacob Dotson’s strike. However, Cartersville responded by converting a corner kick in the 24th minute.

But the second half — and the win — belonged to North Murray.

“The record’s good and we’re going good,” Chambers said. “The big thing we’re always talking about is working together as a team and finishing as a team, and we’re definitely doing that more and more every game.”
