DSC volleyball signs Metzer

Dalton State College volleyball coach Bruna Langner has added another weapon to her arsenal for the 2014 season, recently traveling to Orlando, Fla., to sign Montverde Academy senior Anna Claudia Metzer.

A native of Brazil, Metzer began playing volleyball at a young age in 2006. She has since played in two Brazil national championships and is an eight-time outstanding athlete at the regional and state championships.

Her volleyball abilities helped her receive a better education. Brazil is a hotbed for the sport, but there are no college scholarships for volleyball.

She was able to attend Montverde Academy, a private boarding school, and her coach there was Christeena Bertinetti, who played alongside Langner at Lee University in Cleveland, Tenn. Bertinetti and Langner were also student assistants on the Lady Flames’ coaching staff.

“Christeena and I have been friends since college,” said Langner, who is also from Brazil. “We played for two years together and coached for two years together. We are best friends that try to help each other in any way we can.

“When she told me about Anna I was ecstatic. Anna did a great job for Christeena and I don’t have a doubt that she will do great for Dalton State as well. She fits the philosophy of the team 100 percent. She is the kind of player that works hard no matter what in the classroom and on the volleyball court. She will also bring great leadership to Dalton State. I could be happier to sign her.”

Metzer is excited about what volleyball has done for her and will do in the coming years.

“Most of the opportunities I have had in my life were because of volleyball,” Metzer said. “The sport has opened many doors in my life and should open many more in the future.”

“I have acquired many experiences through my eight years of volleyball. I am really thankful for my parents for always being supportive and encouraging me to keep doing what I love.”

The Roadrunners went 10-14 last year in their inaugural season. While they were a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, because they didn’t have a conference home they weren’t eligible to compete in the postseason. That won’t be the case this year as Dalton State joins the Southern States Athletic Conference.
