Prep roundup: Field is set for state track meet

Dalton and Coahulla Creek each placed four track and field athletes into the state meets, and Northwest Whitfield and Southeast Whitfield had the only local athletes advancing in multiple events.

The Lady Bruins’ McKinley Hopkins qualified Saturday in both the triple jump and 100-meter hurdles at the Class 4A “A” Sectional at Carrollton High School. She had a best jump of 35 feet, 7 inches in the triple jump and a time of 15.50 seconds in the hurdles. The Lady Raiders’ Isabel Salinas qualified in both the 1,600- (5:33) and 800- (2:26) meter races.

The top eight finishers in all field events qualified for the state meet, with the girls events happening at Hugh Mills Stadium in Albany starting on Friday and the boys events at Memorial Stadium in Jefferson the following week. In the case of running events except the 1,600-meter run and 3,200-meter run, instead of finals there will be two heats. The top two finishers in each heat and four next fastest times from either heat will advance to state.

Joining Hopkins is fraternal twin sister Analeigh Hopkins (pole vault, 9-0). Chae Cunningham finished ninth in the pole vault at 8-0 and will be the first alternate. Southeast’s Wendy Perez (discus, 05-9) also moved on. Dalton’s Adrianna Bry-ant broke the school record with a 35-9 in the triple jump. Natalie Ramos (shot put, 33-11) also qualified. For the boys shot put, Dalton’s Hayden Gross (48-6) and Nate Mays (47-5) qualified.

At the Class 3A “A” Sectional at Lakewood Stadium in Atlanta, Coahulla Creek’s Josh Foxx won the high jump with a 6-6. Evelyn Botello (3,200), Timmy Hooper (1,600) and Sadoth Fraire (3,200) also qualified.

For North Murray, Megan Pittman (discus, 107-4) qualified. Erin Robinson was disqualified in the discus and shot put because she did not attend. Coach Andrea Linsley said she played in an AAU basketball tournament in North Carolina.

At the Class 2A “B” Sectional at Greater Atlanta Christ-ian, Murray County’s Katlyn Richardson (800, 2:32) was the only local athlete qualifying for state.
