Hughes stumbles but Mitchell still low am at Georgia Open golf tourney

Dalton’s Matt Hughes slipped out of the lead Wednesday but remains among the top five at the Tilted Kilt Georgia Open.

Hughes’ 3-over-par 75 in the third round at The Legends course at Chateau Elan in Braselton dropped him from a share of first to fourth place. He’s at 3-under 213 entering the final round of the 72-hole Georgia PGA tournament, five shots off leader Jonathan Fricke of Covington.

Fricke, with whom Hughes shared the lead after the second round — Hughes was the sole leader after an opening-round 68 — shot a 70 on Wednesday and holds a three-stroke edge on Warner Robins’ Chris Wolfe. Decatur’s Kyle Scott is one shot behind Wolfe and one shot ahead of Hughes.

Chatsworth’s Tyler Mitchell is tied with Atlanta’s Brent Witcher for seventh place and remains the tournament’s low amateur. Mitchell shot a 69 on Wednesday for his best round of the tournament and is at 214 for the event.

Dalton’s David Noll Jr. followed rounds of 74 and 75 with another 75 and is in a four-way tie for 34th in the field, which was cut to 60 players after the second round. Tunnel Hill’s Justin Jolly is at 228 after shooting a 77 on Wednesday. He’s tied with two others for 52nd.
