Middle school roundup: North Whitfield Pioneers repeat wrestling title sweep

North Whitfield’s wrestling team successfully defended its North Georgia Middle School Athletic League duals and traditional tournament championships this past weekend at Eastbrook Middle School.

The Pioneers have won three duals titles in a row and started the quest Friday with a 69-6 win in the first round against Bagley. Gladden beat Eastbrook 45-38 in the other first-round match, and North Whitfield won 59-15 against Gladden in the championship.

North Whitfield had 11 wrestlers win both of their duals matches, led by Derrick Green in the 72-pound weight class. Other two-match winners were James Loi (78), Juan Rangel (100), Trent Brewster (108), Alan Richmond (115), Malik Coleman (130), Ethan Arnold (140), Ebs Hernandez (154/165), Jonathan Tant (180), Daniel Lopez (220) and Walter Richards (275).

Gladden’s two-match winners were Melqui Delgado (86) and David Bautista (123/230).

On Saturday, North Whitfield had nine wrestlers win individual championships and six others place either second or third. Winning titles were Green (72), Rangel (100), Richmond (115), Coleman (130), Alex Hall (154), Hernandez (165), Tant (180), Lopez (220) and Richards (275). Loi (78), Brody Smith (86) and Arnold (140) each finished second. Thomas Latham (94), Brewster (108) and Nick Westbrook (123) each finished third.

Gladden and Eastbrook tied for second in the team standings. Gladden placed 12 wrestlers, with Delgado winning the 86-pound title. Other placers were: Ryan Carter (72, third); John Dooley (78, third); Tre Roper (94, second); Neal Henry (100, second); Ethan Carol (108, fourth); Dylan Shelton (115, fourth); Bautista (123, second); Cody Burke (154, second); Dakota Haynes (165, third); Christian Perez (180, second) and Austin Leon (285, second).

No other individual results were submitted by The Daily Citizen’s deadline.

Area middle school results are published on Mondays and Thursdays in The Daily Citizen. Coaches should send information to sports@daltoncitizen.com with the final score, outstanding performers, team’s overall and league win-loss record (if applicable) and date and location of the competition included in the report. Events that take place on Monday and Tuesday must be received by noon Wednesday for publication; events that take place on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday or Saturday must be received by noon Sunday for publication. Events reported after the deadline or without complete information may not be published.
