Mountaineers win five games at tournament

North Murray High School’s football team went 5-3-1 in pool play Friday at the Cam Newton Foundation’s seven-on-seven championship tournament in Charlotte, N.C.

Mountaineers coach David Gann said the day’s wins included a victory over Fairburn’s Creekside, which went 15-0 last season en route to the Georgia High School Association’s Class 5A state title.

Teams will be seeded based on pool play results for today’s bracketed competition, and Gann said the Mountaineers could be as high as fifth, depending on tiebreakers.

“We played very well,” Gann said. “We beat some very good football teams.”

Newton, the Carolina Panthers quarterback, hosted tournaments around the Southeast, with the top two teams at each event moving on to the championship.
