Close call for Noll at Georgia Amateur

Most years at the Georgia Amateur Championship, Dalton’s David Noll Jr. is in the fight for first place.

On Friday he had to battle just to make the cut at the Georgia State Golf Association event.

It was a fight Noll won — but barely. His 6-over-par 76 in Friday’s second round at Macon’s Idle Hour Club gave him a 36-hole total of 8-over 148, putting him on the line as the 72-hole tournament’s field of 144 was trimmed to the low 70 golfers and ties.

Noll — who won the tournament in 2003 and 2011 and was runner-up in 2005, 2009 and 2012 — is tied with nine others for 68th place. He’ll be back for today’s third round and Sunday’s final round.

Two other local golfers won’t be that fortunate. Chatsworth’s Tyler Mitchell shot a 73 on Fri-day, cutting five strokes off his opening round, while Cohutta’s Nick Ray followed his opening 79 with an 80.

Evans’ Kelby Burton leads the tournament at 4-under 136, two strokes ahead of Stockbridge’s Steven Fisk, Bonaire’s Stan Gann Jr. and Peachtree Corners’ Zachary Healy.
