From Staff Reports
Northwest Whitfield High School’s girls soccer team opened its season with a 10-0 win at Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe on Monday.
Juliana Gomez scored two goals and assisted on two more, while freshmen Vanessa Lara and Synthia Coronel each scored twice and Coronel added an assist. Andrea Garcia scored once and was credited with forcing two own goals, Nancy Paz recorded a goal and one assist and Judith Tapia assisted a goal. LFO was held to no shots on goal in a dominant defensive performance by Northwest.
It was Melissa Torbett’s first game in her second stint as Lady Bruins coach. She previously led the program in its first five seasons, from 2003 to 2007.
Although all Georgia High School Association soccer teams were permitted to kick off their regular season Monday, the Lady Bruins were the only team from Murray or Whitfield counties to do so. Coahulla Creek was scheduled to host Murray County in boys and girls matches but called them off due to the threat of inclement weather.
