DSC cheer ends up fifth at event

The Dalton State College competitive cheerleading squad finished sixth in the College Co-ed division at Sunday’s Cheersport National Championships.

Held at the Georgia World Congress Center in Atlanta, the University of Kentucky White Squad won the division ahead of runner-up Georgia Tech. The Roadrunners’ team includes 12 athletes and is competing for the first time in intercollegiate competitive cheerleading.

“This team has put in a lot of long hours and has a tireless work ethic,” Dalton State coach Robyn Newell said in a press release from the school. “I could not ask for a better group of student-athletes.

“Our performance here will help inspire us to even greater heights as we move forward. We went up against great competition and certainly held our own.  We are all proud to be Roadrunners.  No one could believe we were a first year program.”

The squad will perform the same routine done at nationals during halftime of the final men’s basketball home game, which is Feb. 25 inside the trade center.
