Prep roundup: Christian Heritage tops Coahulla Creek on diamond

Christian Heritage School’s varsity baseball team used a big fifth inning to rally for a 4-3 win against visiting Coahulla Creek on Saturday.

Trailing 3-0, the Lions (2-0) scored three runs in the fifth inning on two errors by the Colts (0-1). They took the lead in the sixth inning with Tyson Cooper’s RBI single bringing home Sam Sikes.

Brady Souther started on the mound for Christian Heritage and pitched four innings, allowing three runs off four hits and six walks. He struck out four but did not figure into the decision.

Jonathan Lewallen pitched three no-hit innings with one walk and one strikeout to earn the win in relief.

“We’re excited for him as a sophomore to come in and do a job like that,” Christian Heritage coach Noah Stokes said. “Brady got himself off the hook a couple times to keep it at 3-0.”

Coahulla Creek’s Zack Glines started and pitched four innings, allowing two earned runs off three hits and five walks. He struck out five. Braiden Jacobs pitched two innings in relief, allowing one run off three hits while striking out three.

“We kind of let some plays get away from us, but they seemed to respond well to that,” Coahulla Creek coach Michael Bolen said. “... There wasn’t a lot of head hanging. Christian Heritage just got the hits when they needed them.”

Cooper finished the game 2-for-3, while Chase Tidwell went 1-for-2 with an RBI for the Lions. Jacobs drove in a run for the Colts, while Jackson Sheppard finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and Hayden Lock scored once.

“We have a lot to work on,” Bolen said, “but we have a lot to work with, too.”
