Prep roundup: Harper hot on the hill for Raiders

Southeast Whitfield High School senior pitcher Rhett Harper doesn’t seem to mind chilly weather.

As temperatures dipped into the 30s Monday afternoon, Harper wasn’t bothered at all, striking out 10 batters in 5 1/3 innings of one-hit ball to lead the Raiders to their first victory of the season against Gordon Central.

Southeast (1-1) led 8-0 when Harper left the game, but the Raiders were plagued by errors and miscues before finally pulling out an 8-7 victory in the non-region game.

“We swung the bats well, and Rhett on the mound was lights out,” Southeast coach Brad Lofton said. “The only hit he gave up was a swinging bunt that trickled down the line. But when the sun went down, that was the sign from the baseball gods to call it a day. We started subbing some players and had a few errors that really let Gordon Central get back into the game.”

Senior Blake Foster struck out the only man he faced in the bottom of the seventh to earn the save. Foster was also a big piece of the offense, going 3-for-4 with a double and a pair of RBIs. Ty Pendley was a perfect 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Colter Faith and Harper were both 2-for-3 as the Raiders pounded out 12 hits.

Southeast junior varsity boys soccer 2, Northwest Whitfield 2: Alexis Rodriguez had a goal and an assist for the host Raiders, while Northwest got a pair of goals from Daniel Gomez as the score remained knotted after playing through overtime.

Christopher Guijon had the other goal for Southeast (1-0-1) with Jose Hurtado adding the other assist. Nick Infante had an assist for the Bruins (2-1-1).

• Because of rain and cold temperatures, the remainder of Monday’s prep sports schedule was canceled.

Christian Heritage’s home baseball game against Northwest Whitfield and Dalton’s trip to North Murray both were called off. Dalton will now travel to take on the Mountaineers on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.

The tennis match between Christian Heritage and Murray County also was called off, as was North Murray’s trip to Ringgold. North Murray and Ringgold have rescheduled their match for March 27 as part of a doubleheader at the Murray County Recreational Department’s tennis courts.
