Area middle school roundup: Seventh-grade Cougars hold on for football win

A strong defensive effort in the fourth quarter helped Dalton Middle School’s seventh-grade football team hang on for a 22-14 victory against Chattanooga’s McCallie on Thursday at Harmon Field.

Amir El Ameen had a 2-yard rushing touchdown and also ran for an extra point to lead the Cougars on offense, while Drew Greeson added a 6-yard touchdown pass to Sam Carlson and Henry Hansen completed a 15-yard touchdown pass to Ivan Mora.

Tyis Love chipped in an extra-point run for Dalton.

New Hope seventh grade 6, North Whitfield 0: In a losing effort for the Pioneers on Thursday, Evan Brant and Jon Tant both had strong defensive performances as each tallied multiple tackles and a sack apiece.

New Hope did not submit statistics by The Daily Citizen’s deadline.

North Whitfield eighth grade 8, New Hope 0: Michael King’s 69-yard touchdown run and two-point conversion run provided the game’s only scoring and lifted the Kodiaks on Thursday.

Donavan Sims’ eight-tackle performance led New Hope on the other side of the ball.

New Hope did not submit statistics by The Daily Citizen’s deadline.

McCallie eighth grade 24, Dalton 12: J.P. Tighe connected with Caleb Ramsey and Aaron Fraire on touchdown passes, but the Cougars (2-2) came up short in Thursday’s loss at Harmon Field.


• Will Douglas and Trevor Owens shared medalist honors in a nine-hole match victory against New Hope on Friday at Nob North Golf Course in Varnell as North Whitfield’s boys remained undefeated through eight contests this season.

Douglas and Owens each shot a 12-over-par 48, while Jake Hawkins (53) and Will Brooker (55) also scored for the Pioneers as they won 204-224. Dylan Jolley (57) and Carter Staten (63) also competed for North Whitfield.

New Hope’s counting rounds came from Haven Morgan (50), Trey Pilcher (56) and Taylor Garlock and Riley Jordan, who each shot a 59. Carson Johnson (63) also competed for the Kodiaks.

In the girls match, Alaena Thompson’s 58 earned medalist honors and led New Hope to a 117-121 win.

Autumn Thompson (59) had the other counting round for the Lady Kodiaks, while Riley Merritt (62) and Madison Smith (63) also competed.

North Whitfield’s score was compiled by Jenna Bagley (60) and Ashley Couch (61), while Destiny Hill (62), Serene Wiggins (62) and Shea Bagley (63) also participated.
