Northwest grad sets record for home runs

From Staff Reports

— Northwest Whitfield High School graduate Jessica Brown became the single-season home run record holder for Rhodes College’s softball program this past weekend.

Brown hit her 11th homer of the year Sunday in the Lynx’s 3-2 win against Birmingham Southern. Brown, who graduated from Northwest in 2010, played first base for the 2009 Lady Bruins team that finished third in the Class 4A state tournament.

The junior designated hitter leads Rhodes in slugging percentage (.781), hits (53) and doubles (13). She also has the highest batting average (.414) among players on the team with at least 100 at-bats. She is second in RBIs (27).

Rhodes, located in Memphis, Tenn., is an NCAA Division III school. The softball team finished the regular season 23-13 overall — second in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference — and begins the conference tournament today.
