Jamie Jones: Big event for Wounded Warriors

Dwayne Smith gets his first taste of a pro wrestling match tonight. The Dalton resident will take on Luke Gallows (also known as D.O.C.), a former wrestler with Total Nonstop Action Wrestling and World Wrestling Entertainment, at Renegade Championship Wrestling in Chatsworth during the “Road to the Ring” event.

And he’s wrestling for a cause. Proceeds from the event benefit the Wounded Warrior Project.

The night kicks off at 7. There will be a special ceremony for military veterans at 7:30, with wrestling action to follow. The fundraiser continues at 7 p.m. Saturday with more wrestling matches. Smith will not wrestle that night, but he will be in another wrestler’s corner.

In addition to several area wrestlers on the card, former WWE wrestler Jake “The Snake” Roberts is expected to attend both nights. There will also be an auction for autographed wrestling memorabilia as well as a raffle. Tickets each night are $6 for ages 10 and older and $3 for ages 5-9, with children 4 and younger admitted free.

Here are other notes and news items from the world of pro wrestling: Sheamus had surgery this week to repair a torn labrum in his left shoulder. He will be out four to six months.

• During Hulk Hogan’s “Uncensored” speaking tour in Canada this week, he hinted that he will not wrestle again.

• Rey Mysterio is returning to WWE. He will host the company’s Make-A-Wish Celebration in the days before the “SummerSlam” pay-per-view.

• WWE wrestler Darren Young revealed to TMZ that he is gay.

The Local Corner: TWA Friday Night Brawl is at 8 p.m. at the TWA Arena off Reed Road in north Whitfield County, about three miles north of the bypass. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for ages 6 to 12; senior citizens 60 and older with proof of age will be admitted for $3. Kids younger than 6 will be admitted free. Any military member with proper identification will be admitted free. If it’s your birthday, you will be admitted free.

Renegade Championship Wrestling is at 8 p.m. Saturdays at 806 Second Ave. in Chatsworth.
