Prep roundup: Pierce helps Bruins grab series sweep

Morris Innovative girls 2, Pepperell 2 (2-1): Itzel Moreno’s save on Pepperell’s final penalty kick attempt gave the Lady Tigers their first win in the program’s inaugural season.

Moreno also stopped one other attempt during the shootout in Lindale — the Lady Dragons missed two of their five tries — while Berenice Hernandez and Gabby Perez converted penalty kicks for Morris Innovative (1-12, 1-11).

The win was also the first career victory for Lady Tigers coach Irene Quintero, a 2008 graduate of Dalton High School.

Morris Innovative led a game for the first time ever when Liz Arevalos scored in the first half, but Pepperell tied to make it 1-1 at halftime. Hernandez’s second-half goal regained the lead for the Lady Tigers, but Pepperell tied late to force overtime.

Morris Innovative boys 4, Pepperell 0: The Tigers spread out the scoring in their third straight win and Danny Alonzo earned his second straight shutout for a Region 7-2A road victory.

David Alonzo, Elmer Hernandez, Luis Perez and Pedro Ulloa each had one goal for Morris Innovative (7-6, 6-6), while Felipe Barrientos added an assist.

Danny Alonzo has held opponents scoreless for his past 210 minutes in goal.

Gordon Central girls 2, Coahulla Creek 0: The Lady Colts (3-10, 2-7 Region 5-3A) trailed 1-0 at halftime and allowed an own goal in the second half in the road loss.

Melissa Cabrera made 12 saves in net for Coahulla Creek, which was led by Regina Pacheco’s six shots.

• Coahulla Creek’s boys improved to 9-3-1 overall and 7-2 in Region 5-3A, winning by forfeit due to Gordon Central cutting its boys soccer program. The Calhoun Times reported earlier this week that the school was investigating possible hazing on the team.

Murray County boys 8, Model 0: In a late result from Thursday, Siliverto Nunez recorded a hat trick and Jose Ruiz scored twice as the Indians (9-2-1) improved to 9-1 against Region 7-2A competition with the home win. Juanito Bautista, Alberto Soto and Antonio Reynoso each added a goal.
