Roadrunners cheer finishes fourth place at Alabama

In Dalton State College’s first competitive cheerleading event, the United Cheer and Dance camp at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, the Roadrunners claimed fourth place in their division for overall performance, crowd interaction and spirit.

DSC’s first four-year cheerleading team returned Monday from the combined camp, which included schools from small community colleges to some of the top NCAA Division I institutions. The Roadrunners also took trophies for band dance, cheer and sideline chant.

“We held our own,” cheerleading assistant coach Austin Culp commented about the more than 40 schools in attendance.

The DSC cheer squad will perform at halftime of the men’s basketball home games, which begin in November.

“We had an opportunity to pick it up a notch,” cheerleading head coach Robyn Newell said. “Seeing the efforts of other schools helped us recognize what we need to do to compete successfully and to provide the best entertainment for sporting events.”

Prior to making the trip, the squad elected Kandi Adams and Manuel Montelongo 2013-2014 team captains, Newell said.
