Middle school roundup: Dalton track and field sweeps

Dalton Middle School’s boys and girls track and field teams both finished first at this past weekend’s Bradley Invitational in Cleveland, Tenn.

The Cougars’ Adan Rodriguez won the 1,600- and 3,200-meter run, setting a school record in the latter with a time of 11 minutes, 47 seconds. Zec Cobb was also a double winner and record setter, taking the long jump with a program mark of 19 feet, 11 1/2 inches and winning the high jump at 5-6. Michael Perez won the discus with a throw of 113-0.

For the Lady Cougars, Pressley Craig broke her 100 hurdles record for the fourth time in her middle school career with a time of 16.08, while Alex Alcantar set a school record in the 800 (2:16) and Kyera Beton won the 100 (13.06).

Baseball

Dalton 15, Cleveland (Tenn.) 0: The Cougars (10-0), who outhit their hosts 15-1, led 6-0 after one inning of Tuesday’s rout, which was shortened to five innings by the run rule.

Sam Stepp, who went 3-for-3 in the game, and J.P. Tighe, who was 2-for-3 with two doubles, each had a two-run double in the first. Brock Nelson and Thomas Wright also finished the game with multiple hits.

Nelson earned the win on the mound, allowing one hit and two walks while striking out six in three innings. Stepp and Cole Shelton also pitched for Dalton.

• Bagley swept a doubleheader with Westside on Monday, winning 7-0 and 15-1.

In the first game, the Braves’ Brody Frazier pitched for the win and struck out eight in five innings. He also scored twice and had two hits, including a two-run home run. Blake Davis added three hits and two runs.

In the second game, Davis homered twice and scored three runs, while Waylyn James added another home run. Jaden Baggett had two hits and two runs. On the mound, Connor Rice struck out four in three innings before James pitched a scoreless fourth.

• This past week, New Hope split a doubleheader with North Whitfield, winning the first game 6-5 but losing the second game 8-7.

In the opener, Chase Drury’s two-out RBI single in the bottom of the seventh was the winning hit for the Kodiaks (11-4, 7-1 North Georgia Middle School Athletic League). Other offensive leaders were Omar Hernandez, who was 2-for-2 with two home runs and four RBIs; Grant Middleton, who was 2-for-3 with an RBI, Devin Wellborn, who was 3-for-4; and Cameron Womac, who was 2-for-3.

Sebastian Orozco picked up the win on the mound after working the final 1 2/3 innings. He struck out three and walked two.

Wellborn started and worked the first 5 1/3 innings before giving way to Orozco. He allowed five earned runs on five hits with four walks and two strikeouts.

In the second game, the Kodiaks lost despite rallying for four runs in the final inning.

Middleton had two hits and drove in three runs, while Drury had two RBIs and Logan Branson, Orozco and Wellborn each drove in a run.

Orozco worked 5 1/3 innings, allowing three earned runs while walking three and striking out eight.

North Whitfield did not submit statistics from the doubleheader.
