Noll loses in final at Atlanta Amateur Match Play Championship

From Staff Reports

— Dalton’s David Noll Jr. missed his bid for a fifth title at the Atlanta Amateur Match Play Championship on Sunday, losing the trophy match in 19 holes to Peachtree Corners’ Zachary Healy, a high school senior.

Noll started Sunday’s match at Rivermont Golf and Country Club in Johns Creek with birdies on the first two holes before both players made par on the next four holes and bogeyed the one after that. But with Noll still 2 up at the turn, Healy won holes 11, 13 and 14, taking a 1 up lead with four to play.

The next three holes went back and forth as Noll won 15, Healy won 16 and Noll took 17. Standing on the 18th tee with the match all square, both players hit drives in the fairway then made par to prolong the competition. On the 19th hole, Healy’s birdie bested Noll’s par to end the match.

Noll — who won this Georgia State Golf Association event in 2005, 2008, 2009 and 2012 — had an exemption into the 32-golfer match play bracket. Everyone else qualified through Thursday’s stroke play.

Noll’s other victories at the tournament were 1 up over Savannah’s Danny Nelson in the first round, 23 holes over Peachtree Corners’ Mitch Kim in the second round, 3 and 2 over Sea Island’s Jack Hall in the quarterfinals and 3 and 1 over Johns Creek’s Jerry McFadden in the semifinals.
