Cross country: Murray running to state

For the second year in a row, the Murray County High School boys cross country team finished in second place at the Region 7-2A cross country meet.

This year, they weren’t happy about it.

The Indians finished second to Calhoun — a team Murray County had beaten in three previous races — on Wednesday at Georgia Highlands College in Cartersville.

“Our top three runners out of five were close to a minute off of their (usual) time. I don’t know what happened,” Murray County coach Sam Young said. “The only explanation in talking to them was that they just didn’t have it today. Next Saturday at state will be another day and maybe we will put it together then.

“I am very pleased, all things considered,” Young said. “I am proud of all of the hard work they have put in, and you just have one of those days.”

Calhoun finished with 48 points to top the Indians, who finished with 66. Pepperell (70) was third, followed by Model. Both the Indians and the Lady Indians, who finished fourth overall, will advance to the state meet in Carrollton on Nov. 9. The top four teams from each region qualify for the state meet.

It was certainly a pack mentality across the 5K course for the Indians with Servio Martinez leading the team with an 11th-place finish in a time of 18 minutes, 57 seconds. Murray County runners followed in four of the next five places to earn their finish. Other counting scores came from Antonio Martinez (12th, 18:58), Jose Ruiz (13th, 18:59), Filberto Nunez (14th, 18:59) and Ivan Delgado (16th, 19:00).

“It would have been great if they had been able to have a few in the single digits finishing,” Young said. “Calhoun had four guys in the top 10.”

Coosa won a tight, three-team race for the top spot in the girls race, scoring 40 points for the victory. Calhoun followed with 41 and Model was third with 43. Murray County’s 104 was good enough for fourth overall.

Katlyn Richardson led the Lady Indians with a time of 25:09. Individual place finishes for Murray County were not available. Other runners scoring for the Lady Indians were Monica Bermudez (26:53), Nicole Hammett (27:03), Maddie Phillips (27:13) and Chloe Brown (27:16).

Morris Innovative was scheduled to compete in the meet, but no results were reported before The Daily Citizen’s deadline.
