Prep roundup: Little things push Colts past Dalton

Coahulla Creek High School baseball coach Michael Bolen knows his team won’t overpower many opponents with home runs or huge strikeout totals.

But he believes if the Colts can move runners around and limit their mistakes, as they did Tuesday night in a 9-4 win at Dalton, they will have a successful year.

Coahulla Creek (1-1) strung together eight hits and took advantage of seven Dalton errors for their run production in the non-region matchup, while Braiden Jacobs scattered seven hits and Coahulla Creek’s defense committed just one error.

“We did a great job of situational hitting,” Bolen said. “We got good defense, got good pitching and were pretty pleased with everything. (We’re) trying to hang our hat on our defense. We have a young roster — over half is freshmen — and we are still learning and trying to get better each game.”

Jacobs pitched six innings and was also 2-for-4 with a two-run double in the fifth, while Zack Glines had a two-run double and Jackson Sheppard doubled in one run. Luke Brock and Hayden Lock also had RBI singles.

Dalton’s offense relied on its power, with Grant Sane going 2-for-2 with a homer in the fourth, while Charlie Martin homered in the fifth. Nick Malcheski also drove in a run for the Catamounts (0-2).

North Murray 9, Union County 2: Aaron Granger didn’t give up an earned run in five inn-ings of work, struck out six and was 2-for-4 with a double and a pair of RBIs to lead the Mountaineers (1-2) to the non-region road win.

Cole Vaughn was 2-for-4 with an RBI and scored twice, while Blake Burris also drove in a pair of runs. Brady Harper had four strikeouts in two scoreless innings of relief work.

Dalton junior varsity 9, Coahulla Creek 2: Clark Hatfield had a two-RBI double and Levi Jackson also doubled for the Colts (1-0), while Ethan Cronan started on the mound and worked one inning, striking out the side.

Northwest Whitfield JV 12, Christian Heritage 8: Seth Hutchinson earned the win in relief as the Bruins opened with a home win, while Michael Pipkin and Jordan Frye each added two hits.
