Dalton State men's tennis stumbles at home

Dalton State College’s men’s tennis team fell to 4-2 for the season with a 6-3 loss to the University of North Georgia on Tuesday at Lakeshore Park in Dalton.

Dalton State is a first-year National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics program, while North Georgia is an NCAA Division II program in Dahlonega.

Dalton State’s Nikolay Nikiforov earned a singles victory and also teamed with Adam Hornby for a doubles win. The Roadrunners’ other point came from Lucas de Souza’s straight-sets singles victory.

“North Georgia was a great test,” Dalton State coach Zack Rogers said in a release from Dalton State. “We played better in doubles than we have been, but we obviously struggled a bit more than expected in singles. This is all part of our maturation process. Leading into a full week of tennis, we have a lot of room to get better and many things to work on.”

Dalton State plays at Point University in West Point on Friday before leaving for a six-day stint at the Professional Tennis Registry’s Spring TennisFest Tournament in Hilton Head, S.C.

“We will keep working and keep getting better,” Rogers said. “Next week we will play a lot of tennis and the team is chomping at the bit to get back to action and to winning.”
