Area prep roundup: Colts tennis wins again

Coahulla Creek High School’s boys tennis team won its fourth straight match to start the season, picking up a 4-1 victory at Cartersville in Region 5-3A play on Wednesday.

The Colts, who are now 3-0 versus region competition, got singles wins from No. 1 Jake Mathis, 6-2, 6-3, and No. 3 Alex Jarjoura, 6-0, 6-0.

In doubles, No. 1 Donovan Newby and Austin Turner won 6-1, 6-1, while No. 2 Melvin Dixon and Jake Stevenson accepted a forfeit.

Cartersville girls 3, Coahulla Creek 2: The Lady Colts (3-1, 2-1 Region 5-3A) lost on the road, with both of their wins coming in singles as No. 1 Erin Orem won 2-6, 7-6 (9-7), 6-4, and No. 2 Kathryn Barker won 3-6, 6-4, 6-1.

Varsity girls soccer

Ringgold 4, North Murray 0: In a late result from Tuesday night, the shorthanded Lady Mountaineers opened their season with a Region 5-3A loss on the road.

Amber Bandy made 21 saves for North Murray — Ringgold had 25 shots on goal — while Alonda Bennett had a pair of shots on goal.

Lady Mountaineers coach Justin Frazier said he was missing four starters and two bench contributors because of illness and injuries but expects to be at full strength by next week.

Armuchee 3, Murray County 0: In another late result from Tuesday, Murray County lost on the road, falling to 1-1 overall and in Region 7-2A.

Murray County keeper Paxon Dali made seven saves, including stopping a penalty kick.

Junior varsity boys soccer

Northwest Whitfield 5, Murray County 0: Daniel Gomez and Christian Joseph each scored twice in Wednesday’s road win, while Davis Minor added the other goal for the Bruins (2-1).
