Prep roundup: Dalton boys golfers finish second at Windstone tournament

The Dalton boys golf team was the top finisher among local teams and finished second to 2012 Class 5A state champions Milton in the Snow Tiger Invitational tournament at Windstone Golf Club in Ringgold.

Milton finished with 127 team points, followed by the Catamounts with 121.5. The tournament was scored on a modified Stableford format which awarded 4 points for eagles, 3 for birdies, 2 for pars, 1 for bogeys and a half point for double bogeys. Coahulla Creek finished with 82 team points, and Christian Heritage had 57.5.

Allen Behr led Dalton with 32 points, and the rest of the team’s four counting scores were close behind. Jacob Brown had a 31.5, while Davis Kirk and Landon Hicks each shot 29.

“I was very pleased,” said first-year Dalton head coach Hunter Johnson. “Milton has a lot of talent, and our guys did a good job. We had to battle through a couple of tough stretches of holes, but they didn’t give up and could really set the tone for the rest of the year.”

All four of Coahulla Creek’s golfers were close together as well. David Manis (22), Austin Cole (21), Brannon Wilson (20) and Ian Conway (19) had scoring rounds for the Colts. Blake Carver led Christian Heritage with 26.5 points with Kyle Stanley (23), Tyler Tipton (4) and Hutch Swafford (4) counting toward the team total.

Dalton boys 2, Habersham Central 1 (OT): Javier Rodriguez scored both goals for the defending Class 4A state champion Catamounts, who are undefeated through three matches this season and have won 25 straight.

Rodriguez’s first goal came in the 20th minute and his go-ahead score came eight minutes into extra time. Habersham tied the game at 1 with a penalty kick just before halftime.

Dalton JV boys 2, Habersham Central 0: Cristian Valladares scored both goals for the Catamounts (4-0). Antonio Martinez assisted both goals.
