Prep roundup: Murray County softball loses at Calhoun

Murray County High School’s softball team couldn’t get its bats going Monday, tallying just three hits in an 8-0 loss at Region 7-2A foe Calhoun.

The Lady Indians fell to 7-5 overall and 4-2 in league play. Coach Sandra Johnston summed up the game in four words: “We just didn’t hit.”

No player had more than one hit.

“That’s the bottom line,” Johnston continued. “We just didn’t hit.”

Lindsey Dunn took the loss in the pitcher’s circle for the Lady Indians. She threw four innings, allowing five runs on six hits and two walks. Whitney Gribble pitched two innings and allowed three runs on four hits and two walks while striking out two.

Calhoun scored two runs in the second inning, three in the third, two in the fifth and one more in the sixth.

“We didn’t have any errors,” Johnston said. “We just didn’t hit. We had more strikeouts (12) this game than any other this season.

“I don’t know if they were just trying so hard and couldn’t get focused. I don’t know. I can’t even answer that.”

Southeast did not report statistics by The Daily Citizen’s deadline.

Northwest 6, Gilmer 6: Jay Jones scored the Bruins’ only touchdown, a 45-yard reception from Paxton Pardee with about 1:30 left in the season opener on the road.

Northwest’s Noah Conry also had a solid game at defensive end, coaches said, getting in the backfield multiple times.
