Dalton water polo is in state tourney today

Dalton’s boys water polo team is seeded 10th in the 21-team field for this weekend’s Georgia High School Water Polo Association state tournament.

The double-elimination competition began Friday at the Cumming Aquatic Center. Dalton, which finished the regular season 6-11, has a bye to the second round and will play at 8 a.m. today against the winner of No. 15 seed St. Pius X’s “B” squad and No. 18 seed Lakeside-Dekalb’s “B” squad.

With a win, Dalton will play No. 7 seed Lakeside-Dekalb “A” at 10:30 a.m. If Dalton loses its first game today, it will play in the losers’ bracket at 2 p.m.

Dalton coach Charles Todd said he would like to see his team finish better than its seed. Dalton was sixth last year in its inaugural season.

“To finish in that range again would be strong,” Todd said.

The tournament concludes Sunday with the 15th-place game scheduled for 11 a.m. and the championship at 4:30 p.m.

The first season for Dalton’s girls water polo team ended last weekend with a pair of losses in the state tournament.
