Middle school football championships: Gladden, Westside win titles

Gladden’s seventh-grade team and Westside’s eighth-graders won the North Georgia Middle School Athletic League football championships this past week.

In the eighth-grade title game, Westside rolled to a 26-0 victory over visiting Gladden on Thursday and finished the season 8-0.

Michael Ricketts caught a pair of touchdown passes, rushed for a 17-yard touchdown and recovered a pair of fumbles to lead the Rockets. Ricketts’ touchdown catches covered 41 and 37 yards and were thrown by Luke Shiflett, who also completed a 21-yard touchdown pass to Harley Goodman, who rushed for a two-point conversion.

The Rockets — who led 14-0 at halftime — were sharp on defense, too, forcing five turnovers on their way to the shutout. In addition to Ricketts’ fumble recoveries, Chase Burton and Tristan Lopez each recovered one, while Levi Lambert intercepted a pass to stop the Warriors (4-3-1) as they were threatening to score.

In the seventh-grade title game, Gladden won the championship for the second straight year by beating Eastbrook 12-8 on Wednesday at Murray Field in Chatsworth. With the win, Gladden avenged a 16-12 loss to the Mustangs during the regular season.

Trevor Cox ran for a pair of touchdowns to stake the Warriors (6-2) to a 12-0 halftime lead before Eastbrook (4-3-1) scored on its first possession of the second half and added a two-point conversion to cut the Warriors’ lead to four points.

Gladden’s defense held up the rest of the way, sealing the victory by knocking down a fourth-down pass with 30 seconds to play.
