Dalton High School’s girls tennis team suffered its first loss of the postseason Tuesday, but it won’t keep the Lady Catamounts from pressing on in the Class 4A state tournament.
Dalton (16-3) lost a coin toss with Marist (17-1), the Lady Cats’ opponent in the quarterfinals, and must travel to Atlanta for a 3 p.m. match on Thursday. Both teams are region champions and thus No. 1 seeds — Dalton in Region 7, Marist in Region 6 — and so determination of host privileges for the round came down to the flip.
The Lady Cats beat Banneker 5-0 in last week’s opening round and Carrollton 3-1 in the second round on Monday. Marist advanced to the quarterfinals with a 3-0 win against LaFayette and a 5-0 win against Columbus.
Dalton is in the state quarterfinals for the seventh time in program history but the first time since 2007. Marist — a 21-time state champion, with the first title claimed in 1981 — lost to Johns Creek in last year’s championship.
