All-Area nods for Lady Bruins’ Hopkins, Wilson

A story on The Daily Citzen’s 2013 All-Area Spring Team was published Sunday. The team, which is made up of standouts in boys and girls golf, girls soccer, boys and girls tennis and boys and girls track and field, is selected by the newspaper’s sports staff based on input from local coaches.

All-area selections from Northwest’s girls track and field team were inadvertently left out of the story. The following athletes should have been included:

• McKinley Hopkins, Northwest: The sophomore has already shown considerable talent on the track, particularly in the hurdles, setting school records in both the 100- and 300-meter events this season. She qualified for sectionals in five events, however — both hurdles, plus the triple jump and the 4x100 and 4x400 relays — and advanced to state in both hurdles events. At state, she took ninth in the 100 hurdles, one spot shy of a place on the medal stand. At region, she won the 100 hurdles title, was second in the 300 hurdles and took third in the triple jump.

• Shelby Wilson, Northwest: Before she begins her college cross country and track and field careers at Kennesaw State University, Wilson can look back proudly at what she accomplished in high school. She was The Daily Citizen’s All-Area Spring Team Girls Athlete of the Year as a freshman — she’s a four-time member of the spring all-area lineup; for cross country, she earned three all-area nods plus an honorable mention — and finished her Lady Bruins career with five state medals. She won two of those medals this year, taking fifth in the 800 and second in the 1,600 at the Class 4A meet. In addition, she was second in those events at sectionals after claiming region titles in both. She also ran the anchor leg for Northwest’s 4x400 relay team that finished second to advance to sectionals.
