Colts boys have shot at 3A golf state sectional

Coahulla Creek High School’s boys golf team finished second in the Region 5-3A tournament at Calhoun’s Fields Ferry Golf Course on Thursday, but now the Colts will have to wait to see if they will advance to the Class 2A state sectional tournament.

Neither the Colts nor first-place finisher Gordon Central reached the Georgia High School Association’s sectional qualifying score of 350, but Gordon Central will automatically advance to the state tournament at Belle Meade Country Club in Thomson as the region winner.

Coahulla Creek’s fate is up in the air as the GHSA’s executive committee voted on Monday to allow for the possibility of second-, third- or fourth-place teams from regions to advance to sectionals regardless of their team tally at region tournaments if 16 teams don’t qualify on scores alone.

Alec Longmire led the Colts with his best round of the season, shooting a 13-over 85. Other counting rounds for the Colts came from David Manis (92), Walt Douglas (92) and Brannon Wilson (94).

North Murray was unable to compete for the region championship. The Mount-aineers only had three golfers and therefore were one short of the required golfers for a team score.

Michael Watson (110), Gage Earley (131) and Ethan Sampson (149) played for the Mountaineers.
