Prep Roundup: N. Murray’s offense shut down by Canes

North Murray High School’s baseball team may not be among the group tied for first place in Region 5-3A, but the Mountaineers are sitting fairly comfortably in fourth place.

If the regular season ended today, that would still put North Murray in the state playoffs for the first time.

The Mountaineers lost 11-1 on Thursday at Cartersville, one of three teams currently sharing first in the region, as Purple Hurricanes pitcher Hunter Osborn held North Murray to just three hits. The game was shortened to six innings by the Georgia High School Association’s mercy rule.

North Murray (8-11, 4-3) has also suffered region losses to the other two teams in first place — Ringgold and Sonoraville. Each member of that first-place trio has lost just one region game, with Cartersville beating Ringgold but losing to Sonoraville and Ringgold beating Sonoraville but losing to Cartersville.

Blake Davis’ RBI single brought in Brady Harper in the sixth inning for the only run for the Mountaineers, who have played every team in the region once. Teams in 5-3A play home-and-home series with each league foe.

• Ringgold 10, Coahulla Creek 2: The visiting Colts (4-12, 1-5 Region 5-3A) led 2-0 before Ringgold struck back with University of Georgia signee Slade Dale’s grand slam in the third inning.

Coahulla Creek senior Erick Dominguez staked his team to the early edge with a two-run homer, but the Colts finished with six hits and only one besides Dominguez’s homer was of the extra-base variety. Hayden Lock had a double.

Ringgold added two more runs in the fourth, one in the fifth and three in the sixth.

Zack Glines took the loss, allowing six runs on as many hits and two walks and a hit batter in 3 1/3 innings. Braiden Jacobs finished up on the mound, allowing six hits and a walk while striking out two.

n Murray County did not report results from Thursday’s scheduled Region 7-2A game at Chattooga.
