A Look Ahead: Golf kicks off a busy prep week

Five local high school girls golf teams will compete today in the Lady Conasauga Cup, an annual charity tournament which will be played this year at Indian Trace Golf Course in Chatsworth.

Dalton, Murray County, North Murray, Northwest Whitfield and Southeast Whitfield will compete in the event, which begins at 2 p.m.

Lady Raiders coach Todd Murray, who is organizing the event and who was responsible for beginning the competition, said all proceeds benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Last year, the event raised more than $130.

Dalton won last year’s event in a playoff over North Murray, and this will be the fourth edition of the tournament, which has rotated through local public courses over the first three year. Northwest Whitfield won the first two Cups, and this is the second time it will be played at Indian Trace.

Coming into this year’s match, all of the area’s girls golf teams have been strong.

The Lady Catamounts won the Region 7-4A tournament and clinched a spot in next month’s Class 4A state tournament. Northwest and Southeast shot well enough and finished in the top four and beat the sectional qualifying score to earn a spot in next Monday’s matches. North Murray won the Region 5-3A title and will go on to the Class 3A state event, while Murray County’s team didn’t do well enough in the Region 7-2A tournament to make sectionals. Amber Lewis, however, was the medalist in the region and will play at the Class 2A state tournament.

• There’s tons of state tournament soccer this week among local high schools. Games involving the area’s teams will be played from here to Atlanta this week.

In the Class 4A bracket, Dalton’s and Northwest’s boys will host first round matches Wednesday, with the Cats — the Region 7-4A champions — facing Stone Mountain at 6:30 p.m. at Harmon Field and the No. 2-seeded Bruins facing Grady at 7:30 p.m. in Tunnel Hill. Third Southeast’s boys, who finished third in the region, will travel to Atlanta to face Chamblee starting at 4:30 p.m.

The Northwest girls will travel to Grady on Tuesday, but Lady Bruins coach Anna Stutts said the time hasn’t been determined yet.

On Friday, Murray County’s boys host Lovett in Chatsworth starting at 6 p.m. in a Class 2A game, while North Murray’s boys host Franklin County starting at 7 p.m. in the Class 3A bracket. Also on the Class 3A side, the Coahulla Creek boys will travel to Oconee County with the match starting at 6 p.m.

• Northwest’s baseball team will play at least two baseball games and possibly a third — at its home field this week.

The Bruins, who won the Region 7-4A championship last week, face Grady in a doubleheader Friday starting at 3 p.m. The second game will begin 30 minutes after the first ends. If either team does not win both of those games, then the best-of-three series continues Saturday at 5 p.m. for the rubber match.

• The boys state track and field meets will take place Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Memorial Stadium in Jefferson, the traditional home of what used to be known as the Georgia Olympics.

Coahulla Creek, Dalton, Murray County, North Murray, Northwest Whitfield and Southeast Whitfield all will have individuals at the meet gunning for state titles in various events.

This season, high school golf teams in Murray and Whitfield counties — with a few exceptions — have struggled to put up strong scores on the course.
