Devin Golden: This week’s podcast to sum up year in sports

With the 2013-2014 high school sports season reaching its conclusion last week, so does the every-week occurrence of The Daily Citizen’s “After Deadline” podcast.

At least for a few months.

This week’s episode will be the last weekly installment until August, when the 2014-2015 school year begins. That is when we will preview the high school football, softball and volleyball seasons, plus Dalton State College’s second year for men’s basketball and volleyball.

To our devoted listeners, which range anywhere from 100 to 400 depending on the week, there will be special “After Deadline” shows popping up on www.daltonnow.com throughout the summer. We’re already planning a World Cup-centered show in a couple weeks, plus we’ll have a preview in July for The Daily Citizen’s Southeastern 7-on-7 football Championship. For those who have become fans of the podcast, please continue checking the website for new shows.

This week’s episode will include a wrap-up of the school year; discussion of The Daily Citizen’s soon-to-be-revealed All-Area Boys Soccer Team and Player of the Year; and our top-three favorite sports moments from this past year. It has been a lot of fun — about 30 episodes worth of fun, in fact — talking about local high school and college sports with the much-loved Chris Whitfield (sarcasm) and enjoying a little friendly banter back and forth as he denounces all of my opinions due to my age. Hopefully, this recap episode encompasses all of the humor, edginess and insight we’ve been providing since last October.

• Also, starting Sunday, we’ll begin publishing team previews of each team registered for the Southeastern 7-on-7 Championship. Some are new names, some are returning champions and others are well-known local squads going against the best athletes in the country.

The previews will include each team’s best players, the 2013 record and insight from the coach on what his squad will gain from seven-on-seven competition.

This year’s list of teams comes from as far south as Florida, as far east as Virginia, as far north as Illinois and as far west as Missouri and Louisiana.

• With it being summer, and the Dalton Recreation Department pool now open, it’s time for all youth swimmers to register for the Dalton Dolphins, a swimming and diving team that competes in the Chattanooga Area Swim League.

Those wishing to sign up their kids should come to Dalton High School’s pool between 5:30 and 7 p.m. any Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday through next Monday.
