Whitener joins DSC golf staff

Accomplished local female golfer Marsha Whitener — the 2002 Georgia State Golf Association’s Senior Ladies champion — has been named the assistant women’s golf coach for Dalton State College.

Whitener’s hiring adds to the links staff for the Roadrunners, joining men’s head coach Ben Rickett and women’s head coach Jim McGrew. McGrew, who has been a coach at Northwest Whitfield High School for the last 23 years, was announced by Dalton State Athletic Director Derek Waugh earlier this year.

Whitener is a distant relative of carpet and bedspread pioneer Catherine Evans Whitener, and she is a 15-time Ladies Club Champion at Dalton Golf & Country Club and won the same title at The Farm on 10 different occasions.

She has co-chaired numerous tournaments in the area and served on the Board of Directors of the Georgia Women’s Golf Association. She co-founded Dalton’s famous “Avenue of the Flags” in 1991.

“Marsha has a great reputation in this area for competitive women’s golf,” said McGrew, who will retire from Whitfield County Schools after this school year. “She is a great addition and it will certainly help to have a great player to help out with the girls. She brings a lot to the table. I think that the three of us with Ben all have special skills that we can bring to the table, and I think we can build something special.”

Dalton State will officially revive its athletic program in the 2013-2014 academic year.

“There are not enough adjectives to describe how excited I am to become part of the Dalton State golf program,” Whitener said in a release from the college. “I pray that my playing experience at The Farm, my organizational skills as golf tournament director, and my working with all ages of youth will be the perfect match for a successful golf team.  The athletic staff has already made me feel like family. I am one happy lady to have this opportunity.”

The Farm will serve as the home course for Dalton State.

In his final year at Northwest, McGrew has led the boys team to the Class 4A state tournament later this month at Dalton Golf & Country Club, and the Lady Bruins will compete in the state sectionals on Monday. McGrew will serve as the tournament director for both the boys and girls championships with the girls playing at Nob North. He has been the boys head golf coach at Northwest for the past eight years and led his team to four region titles. The girls won the state championship in 2009. McGrew has also been an assistant football coach for the past 23 years.

“I am excited about it,” McGrew said of the next step in his career. “You get towards the end of one part of your career and you aren’t sure what to do next, but this opportunity came open and it is a huge bonus. I am excited to continue to do what I am doing and do it at the next level and have some success.”
