Past champs take the lead at Clay Dykes

The South Carolina duo of North Augusta’s Bob Rickman and Orangeburg’s Bob Vann combined to shoot a 4-under-par 68 to take the first-round lead at the Clay Dykes Invitational at The Farm Golf Course on Wednesday.

Rickman and Vann held a one-stroke lead over Greens-boro’s Ronald Waeghe and Frank Travetto and the Florida duo of Fred Peel and Ronnie Tumlin at 69. John Darr and Rick Luzar, who won the event in 2009, were in fourth place after the opening day with a 71. Three-time defending champions Mike Rice and Jerry Hudgins were five shots off the lead with a 73.

Rickman and Vann combined to win the South Carolina Senior Four Ball Championship last spring at the Callawassie Island Club, shooting a two-round total of 135 to win by a stroke.

The 54-hole, best ball event for golfers 55 and older will continue with the second round this morning and the finale scheduled for Friday.
