Grant Middleton was 4-for-7 with five RBIs as New Hope Middle School’s baseball team swept Westside in a doubleheader Tuesday night at Northwest Whitfield High School’s Richard S. Chumley Field.
In the first game, New Hope won 9-7, with Omar Hernandez pitching for the win and Devin Wellborn picking up the save.
At the plate, Wellborn was 2-for-2 with a double and three RBIs, Chase Drury was 2-for-3 with three RBIs, Cameron Wo-mac was 2-for-3 and Caleb Ram-sey drove in a run for New Hope.
For Westside, Grant Terrell drove in three runs and Luke Shiflett drove in two.
In the second game, Hernan-dez was 2-for-4 with three RBIs as the Kodiaks won 7-3 behind Logan Branson, who allowed six hits, walked four and struck out two in 3 1/3 innings on the mound to pick up the win.
For Westside, Cole Roberts was 2-for-4.
• Dalton 6, Ringgold 0: The Cougars played error-free defense for the third straight game to open the season, backing a strong effort on the mound by Sam Stepp, who allowed one hit in four innings of work Saturday at Ringgold.
Maddux Houghton reached base four times to lead Dalton (3-0) at the plate — he had a double and triple — while Tucker Sum-ner tripled and drove in three runs and Thomas Wright had an RBI double.
• Christian Heritage boys 7, Collegedale (Tenn.) Academy 2: The Lions won the top four singles and top three doubles matches to secure a season-opening victory Tuesday on the road.
Singles winners were No. 1 Jordan McClure, 8-2 in pro-set play, No. 2 Patrick Hurney, 8-6, No. 3 Cal Paige, 8-2, and No. 4 Heath Hardaway, 8-3. Doubles winners were No. 1 McClure and Hardaway, 8-1, No. 2 Hurney and Paige, 8-0, and No. 3 Tate Tipton and Will Duddleston, 8-3.
• Christian Heritage girls 6, Collegedale (Tenn.) Academy 3: The Lady Lions won the top four singles and top two doubles matches in their season opener Tuesday on the road.
Singles winners were No. 1 Beyonce Robinson, 9-7, No. 2 Marlee Ellis, 8-2, No. 3 Sydney McEntire, 8-6, and No. 4 Elizabeth Dean, 8-2. Doubles winners were No. 1 Robinson and McEntire, 8-4, and No. 2 Ellis and Dean.
