Area middle school roundup: Gladden goes for sweep of league crowns

Gladden’s football teams picked up a pair of victories in the North Georgia Middle School Athletic League semifinals this past week and will play in this week’s championships.

The seventh-grade Warriors topped visiting Westside 20-0 on Wednesday at Murray Field in Chatsworth. Trevor Cox had a pair of touchdowns and a two-point conversion, while Caleb Ridley added the other touchdown for Gladden, which will host Eastbrook at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Murray Field in the title matchup.

The eighth-grade Warriors beat host Valley Point 38-8 on Thursday, scoring 24 unanswered points in the second half. Gladden’s John Reed finished with a pair of touchdowns, while Jake Chadwick, Tucker Gregg, Corbin Southern and Preston VanMeter each added one and Daniel Rodgers completed the Warriors’ scoring with a two-point conversion.

Gladden plays for the eighth-grade title at 5 p.m. Thursday at Westside.

Eastbrook’s seventh-grade team and Valley Point’s eighth-grade team did not report individual statistics. Details from the other two semifinals were also not received by The Daily Citizen’s deadline.

Golf

• North Whitfield’s boys remained undefeated through 12 matches and Gladden won the girls competition in nine-hole matches between the schools Friday at Nob North Golf Course in Varnell.

In the boys match, Will Douglas’ 7-over-par 43 was good for medalist honors and led the Pioneers to a 197-238 win.

Also scoring for North Whitfield were Trevor Owens (48), Dylan Jolley (53) and Carter Staten (53). Jake Hawkins (56) and Will Brooker (57) also competed for the Pioneers.

Gladden’s score was compiled by Chandler Simmons (57), Evan Varnell (58), Jesse Wood (61) and Ryan Carter (62). Brody Burchet (63) also participated.

Not eligible for the team score but also playing were several North Whitfield junior varsity boys: Elijah Henderson (56), Sam Wilson (57), Tyler Wells (60), Jacob Tate (61), Barrett Barbre (62) and Caleb Payne (63).

In the girls match, Gladden’s Tori Owens medaled with a 50 as the Lady Warriors won 168-177.

Peyton Hawkins also scored for Gladden with a 59, and because the Lady Warriors were without another competitor, their third round was a duplication of their second-best score.

North Whitfield’s score was compiled by Destiny Hill (57), Shea Bagley (60) and Ashley Couch (60), while Jenna Bagley (61) and Serene Wiggins (63) also participated.

• North Whitfield’s boys and New Hope’s girls were the winners in nine-hole competition that also included Westside on Monday at Spring Lakes Golf Club in Murray County.

In the boys match, Owens’ 51 earned medalist honors as North Whitfield’s 217 bested New Hope (229) and Westside (235).

Also scoring for the victorious Pioneers were Douglas (54), Brooker (56) and Staten (56). Jolley (58) and Hawkins (61) also competed for North Whitfield.

New Hope’s score was compiled by Haven Morgan (52), Riley Jordan (58), Trey Swinney (58) and Carson Johnson (61). Also competing for the Kodiaks were Taylor Garlock (62) and Trent Pilcher (64).

Westside’s score came from Chase Carter (57), Dylan Cable (58), Carson Frye (58) and Billy Robinson (62), while Dylan Chastain (64) and Kenny Johnson (64) also participated.

North Whitfield junior varsity boys who were not eligible for the team score but also played: Tate (57), Wells (55), Wilson (61), Spencer Hammontree (63), Henderson (56), Payne (61) and Barbre (62).

In the girls match, Alaena Thompson’s 48 earned medalist honors as New Hope’s 166 topped Westside (176) and North Whitfield (180).

Also scoring for the winning Lady Kodiaks were Autumn Thompson (58) and Riley Merritt (60), while Madison Smith (64) also participated.

Westside’s score was compiled by Abby Canady (56), MacKenzie Mitchell (58) and Erin King (62). Also competing for the Lady Rockets were Lily Adams (63), Abbey McKinney (63) and Alexis Hewitt (64).

Scoring for North Whitfield were Jenna Bagley (59), Shea Bagley (62) and Couch (62), while Hill (63) and Wiggins (63) also competed.

    Dalton’s Mitchell Boggs has signed a minor league contract with the San Francisco Giants, according to baseballamerica.com. Contract information, along with which minor league affiliate Boggs, a pitcher, will start with, was not available in the report, and Boggs was not listed on any of the online rosters for any of the Giants’ minor league affiliates.
