Prep roundup: Ringgold softball wins over North Murray, alone in first

(Continued)

CHATSWORTH —

In the third, Megan Pittman led off with a double and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt. However, the next two batters flied out to second base and grounded out to third, leaving Pittman stranded.

North Murray’s only baserunner the rest of the game was Deal, who was hit by a pitch in the sixth.

“Up to the fourth inning, we played great,” Granger said. “We hit the ball hard. After that, we quit. ... In the last inning, we swung at three pitches and that was the ballgame. We have to be more disciplined. Even with those three at the end, it’s a 10-4 game if they all hit (home runs).”

Deal pitched 3 2/3 innings, allowing four earned runs off four hits and five walks. Baylee Sutton pitched the last 3 1/3 and allowed four earned runs off six hits and a walk.

Ringgold’s Katie Cain picked up the complete-game win, allowing a walk and striking out three.

Heritage-Catoosa 6, Northwest Whitfield 5: The home-standing Lady Generals took advantage of a pair of Lady Bruins errors and a pair of walks to score four runs in the seventh and win the showdown of state-ranked teams and Sub-region 7B-4A rivals.

Northwest had not lost to a Class 4A school since being bounced from the state tournament in 2011. The Lady Bruins came into the game as the No. 1-ranked team in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution’s Class 4A rankings, while Heritage was No. 6.

Heritage was runner-up to Northwest in last year’s Region 7-4A tournament, and the Lady Bruins went on to win the Class 4A state title, their third top-four finish at state in four seasons.

“I told the team one play doesn’t win or lose a game,” Northwest coach Jason Brooker said. “It takes all seven innings, and we didn’t play a complete game tonight. I told (Heritage coach Steve) Chattin that neither team looked like one of the top teams in the state and he agreed. We were both kind of sloppy.”

In addition to the errors, the Lady Bruins left eight runners on base.

Hannah Godfrey led Northwest (15-2, 4-1) with a 3-for-3, two-RBI performance, while Ashley Conner was 2-for-4. Bayli Cruse, who was 2-for-4, and Macy Weeks each drove in a pair of runs.

Dalton 8, LaFayette 6: Hailey Jones went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles and three RBIs as the Lady Cats (6-11, 1-4 Sub-region 7B-4A) put six runs on the board in the fourth to win on the road.

Kylee Harris drove in three as well, going 2-for-4 with a double. Eternity Goodman and Hannah Jones each had an RBI, while Alli Swinford (6-5) went the distance in the circle.

Cartersville 4, Coahulla Creek 2: Kala Franks and LaSha Hedden each had a hit and drove in a run for the host Lady Colts (14-5, 5-2 Region 5-3A).

The Lady Colts’ Erin Harden pitched all seven innings, allowing three earned runs off eight hits and three walks while striking out 11.
