Prep roundup: Lady Bruins continue to roll through tourneys

Volleyball

• Southeast Whitfield won all five of its matches and won the gold division of the Coosa Invitational.

The Lady Raiders (13-6) beat Pepperell 25-22, 25-12 to begin pool play. They followed with a 25-15, 25-8 win against Model and a 25-9, 25-15 victory versus Calhoun. Southeast won its first single-elimination gold bracket match against Adairsville, 26-24, 25-14. The Lady Raiders beat Jefferson in the championship, 25-17, 25-23.

Melisa Fraire had 19 digs. Yasmeen Paloblanco added 38 digs. Angie Purkey tallied 52 assists and 20 digs. Wendy Perez finished with 38 kills, 28 digs and 11 aces. Gaby Gonzalez had 10 aces. Rana Mashburn contributed 16 digs. Yolanda Melgarejo finished with 14 kills.

“This is probably the first time where for multiple games in a row we played together as a team,” Southeast coach Bethany Kenemer said. “We never dropped off today, so we’re really starting to come together and play as a team.”

• Christian Heritage, Coahulla Creek and Northwest competed in the Heritage-Catoosa tournament.

The Lady Colts lost 24-26, 26-24, 15-11 to Ridgeland, fell 25-27, 25-15 to Heritage and beat Christian Heritage 25-23, 25-15 to round out pool play.

Theylost 25-11, 25-15 to Gilmer in the single-elimination bracket play.

Erin Orem had 12 kills, six digs and five aces for Coahulla Creek (7-16). Macey Fossett had 24 assists and nine kills. Taylor Ogle finished with six kills and six assists.

The Lady Lions (14-8) finished 1-4 for the tournament. They lost 25-11, 27-25 to Heritage and 25-21, 25-22 to Ridgeland. In the bracket stage, Christian Heritage beat Boyd Buchanan 25-22, 25-19 but then lost to LaFayette, 25-20, 25-23.

Despite losing four of five, assistant coach Lisa Donahue said her team “played better than we have played the entire year.”

Savannah Roberson had 45 kills, while Jessica Seehorn tallied 67 assists. Brenna Mugge had 34 digs.

Northwest Whitfield did not reports its scores and statistics by The Daily Citizen’s deadline.

• Dalton (2-17) lost four matches in the Darlington tournament.

The Lady Cats fell 25-21, 26-24 to Greater Atlanta Christian, 25-21, 25-18 to Houston County, 16-25, 25-18, 15-11 to Mount Pisgah Christian and 25-18, 25-21 to Lakeview-Fort Oglethorpe.
