Area prep roundup: Lady Cats lead early but Creek rallies for softball win

Dalton High School freshman pitcher Alli Swinford had Coahulla Creek’s softball team baffled for three innings.

Coahulla Creek reliever Erin Harden baffled the host Lady Catamounts for the final four, though, and her Lady Colts adjusted to Swinford the same inning she entered the circle.

Coahulla Creek scored two runs in the fourth, two in the sixth and two more in of the seventh for a 6-1 win over the Lady Cats in a non-region contest.

Harden, a senior, took over the pitching duties when starter Shelbe Dilbeck exited after three innings.

Dalton (2-5) had taken a 1-0 lead in the third on Christen Pender’s RBI single, but LaSha Hedden’s two-run double in the top of the fourth put the Lady Colts (6-3) up for good. Harden pitched four innings, giving up a hit and recording 11 of the possible 12 outs during her four innings by strikeout.

“I don’t know what you can say about her except that she was really on tonight,” Coahulla Creek coach Josh Swiney said of Harden. “We made some adjustments at the plate and it paid off for us. Alli really had us off-balance to start the game.

“We are playing well right now.”

Sydney Ross had a two-run hit in the seventh, while Madeleine Kalafut was the lone Lady Colt with multiple hits, going 2-for-4.

Swinford finished with six strikeouts, allowing three hits and one earned run.

“It was a non-region game. (But) we definitely wanted to win,” Dalton coach Stacy Parker said. “We made some errors. We’ll get better. I have some kids who really love playing and want to do well, and they will.”

Chattooga 6, Murray County 5: Murray County pitcher Lindsey Dunn allowed one earned run on five hits over six innings of work, but her solid outing for the Lady Indians (7-4, 1-1 Region 7-2A) was spoiled by four errors — three of which led to four runs with two outs on the board in the third inning.

Caitlyn Sims and Aubrie Osborne were both 2-for-3 with a pair of RBIs for Murray County.
