Dalton State men’s cross country 3rd at GCSU

— Dalton State’s cross country teams competed Saturday at the Bobcat Invitational in Milledgeville at Georgia College and State University.

The men’s team finished second, while the women’s squad took third. Seven teams competed in the meet.

GCSU won the men’s 8K event with 29 points, and Dalton State had 58. Paul Patterson led the Roadrunners with a second-place finish and time of 29 minutes, 23 seconds. Also counting for Dalton State were Isaac Pacheco (10th, 30:16), Rafael Pacheco (14th, 30:39), Chris Pineda (15th, 30:41) and Brody Cook (17th, 31:20).

Young Harris College topped the 5K women’s field with 34 points, followed by Georgia College’s 39 and Dalton State’s 63.

Natalie Espinoza-Hensley finished third in 20:31 to lead the Lady Roadrunners, who also received scoring finishes from Nayeli Jacobo (10th, 22:09), Julia Parham (14th, 23:13), Mikayla Moran (17th, 23:40) and Jazmin Sanchez (22nd, 24:43).

The Lady Roadrunners’ Natalie Espinoza-Hensley was third in the women’s 5K race with a time of 20:31. Nicole Smith (20:12) and Ciara Wood (20:24) of Young Harris finished one and two in the event.

Dalton State’s teams will compete Sept. 28 at the Mercer Invitaional in Macon.

• Dalton State College’s volleyball team lost 25-23, 25-14, 25-15 to Covenant College Friday in Lookout Mountain.

The Lady Roadrunners fell to 1-4, while the Lady Scots improved to 6-2.

The first set was tied at 18 until Covenant finished with a 7-5 run. The third set was tied at 14, but the Lady Roadrunners only scored one of the next 12 points.

“We started really well in the first game,” Dalton State coach Bruna Langner said. “We were playing a team with good fundamentals. We ended up losing, but we fought to the end.”

The Lady Roadrunners had 21 errors while the Lady Scots had 12.  Covenant College had 33 kills. Dalton State had just 23 kills. Savannah Nelson led Dalton State in kills with seven. Michaela Askew had 11 assists, and Alyne Bianchi had six digs.

 Dalton State’s next match is Thursday in the first contest at home. Due to Bandy Gymnasium renovations not being complete, the Lady Roadrunners will host Reinhardt University at 6:30 p.m. at Dalton High School.
