Valley Point wins behind Hughes’ 5 TDs

— Harrison Hughes threw four touchdown passes and caught another to lead Valley Point Middle School’s eighth-grade football team to a 43-14 win over visiting Eastbrook this past Thursday.

Andrew Sowder hauled in two of the scoring passes from Hughes, while Porter Johnson and Kalum Kirksey each had one. Johnson also threw a touchdown pass to Oscar Gonzalez. Hughes was on the other end of a touchdown pass fro Damian Bradshaw, who also rushed for a score.

Simon Martell’s lone extra point completed the scoring for the Green Waves (4-1-1), while Jacob Wyatt had an interception and Seth Barnett, James Brock, Gonzalez, Kirksey and Jorge Romero contributed to a strong defensive effort.

Eastbrook’s two touchdowns came on kickoff returns. Individual statistics for the Mustangs (0-6) were not reported by The Daily Citizen’s deadline.

• The North Georgia Middle School Athletic League playoffs begin this week with semifinal matchups.

In seventh-grade competition, second-seeded Gladden (4-2) hosts third-seeded Westside (4-2) at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Murray County High School’s Murray Field in one semifinal. In the other, No. 4 seed Eastbrook (3-2-1) takes on top seed Bagley (4-1-1) at 5 p.m. Thursday at North Murray High School’s Mountaineer Stadium.

In eighth-grade competition, fourth-seeded New Hope (3-3) is at top-seeded Westside (6-0) at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. No. 3 seed Gladden (3-2-1) travels to No. 2 seed Valley Point (4-1-1) for a 6 p.m. matchup the same day.

Baylor eighth grade 9, Dalton 6: Caleb Ramsey’s 17-yard touchdown run was the lone score for the Cougars (3-3), who put together a strong defensive effort as they closed the season with a road loss this past Wednesday in Chattanooga.
