Dalton State roundup: Win streak comes to an end for volleyball

— Dalton State College’s volleyball team saw its three-match win streak end at the hands of University of the Cumberlands on Saturday at Dalton High School.

The Roadrunners lost 25-22, 25-17, 25-17 to their opponents and fell to 6-11 in their inaugural season, which started the school’s relaunch of athletics earlier this fall.

In the first game, Dalton State held a 22-21 lead before the Patriots (14-7) scored the final four points. University of the Cumblerlands controlled the second game but had trouble against Dalton State in the third game. The Roadrunners tied the score at 11 before the Patriots scored 14 of the final 20 points.

Alyne Bianchi and Michaela Askew each tallied 14 digs for Dalton State, which also was aided by Karly Newman’s and Tori Pierce’s 11 digs. Askew also had 12 assists, while Clarissa Weber had nine. Savannah Nelson tallied eight kills, followed by Newman’s seven and Bianchi’s six.

The Roadrunners will finish their home schedule this week with two matches.

The first takes place at 11 a.m. today at the Mack Gaston Community Center against College of Coastal Georgia. Dalton State then welcomes Oakwood University to the community center for a 7 p.m. start on Monday.

• The Dalton State men’s and women’s tennis teams will compete through today at the Grizzly Open tournament at the Georgia Gwinnett College tennis facility in Lawrenceville. The Roadrunners are one of 15 colleges represented in both singles and doubles action.

All three of the Roadrunners’ men’s doubles teams lost in Friday night competition. In Flight A, Stephen Moore and Oliver Mitchell of Georgia Southwestern knocked off David Draghiceanu and Hadyn Fava of Dalton State, 8-3. Mark Heinberger and Asteway Adams of Palm Beach Atlantic bested Dalton State’s Nikolay Nikiforov and Adam Hornby, 8-6. Reinhardt University’s Gonzalo D’Avilo and Rene Ramos defeated Dalton State’s Lucas de Souza and Juan Pablo Arguello, 8-5.

In singles play, Nikiforov downed Seth Taylor of Berry College, 2-1, on Friday.

On the women’s side Friday in Flight A doubles, Dalton State’s Laura-Sophie Winter and Diana Narino downed Georgia Southwestern’s Carly Cangelosi and Victoria Ondo, 8-5. The Lady Roadrunner’s Chelsea Powell and Maria Alejandra Bejarano lost to Brankica Orlovic and Natalie Lorenco of Alabama State University.

Women’s singles started Saturday and other singles and doubles teams continued their brackets. However, complete results were not posted on the Georgia Gwinnett College athletics website and not reported by The Daily Citizen’s deadline.
