DSC cross country finishes on upswing

Dalton State College closed its inaugural season of cross country Saturday with a pair of top-15 finishes in the University of South Carolina Beaufort’s Sand Shark Invitational at Sgt. Jasper Park in Hardeville, S.C.

Dalton State’s men’s team took ninth in a 24-team field, while the women’s team was 12th among 21 teams.

The men were led by Paul Patterson, who finished 24th with a time of 25 minutes, 53.25 seconds on the 8K (4.9-mile) course. Also scoring points for the Roadrunners were Isaac Pacheco (51st, 26:43.01), Brody Cook (62nd, 26:58.57), Rafael Pacheco (79th, 27:23.73) and Parker Cook (93rd, 27:45.67).

The top finisher for Dalton State’s women in the 5K (3.1-mile) race was Natalie Espinoza-Hensley (26th, 19:26.28), while Nayeli Jacobo (33rd, 19:40.30), Julie Parham (64th, 20:24.92), Zaria Martinez (86th, 21:11.68) and Jazmin Sanchez (95th, 21:29.90) also scored points.

“I’m really pleased with how the girls ran,” Roadrunners coach Margie Bruner said in a release from Dalton State. “We had two girls under 20 and the others are closing the gap.”

Every Dalton State runner competing Saturday set a personal record, according to the release.

“The kids did amazing against the toughest field they have yet raced against,” Dalton State coach Andy Meyer said in the release. “... I couldn’t be prouder of their effort.”
