What's Going On: Northwest to celebrate title squad

— History finds a way of entering back into our minds, especially for anniversaries.

Northwest Whitfield will get a chance to reminisce this week of some glory days.

The 1987 Lady Bruins slow-pitch softball state championship team will be honored before Thursday’s game against rivals Dalton at the school’s field. First pitch is scheduled for 5:55 p.m.

This is the 25th anniversary of the title as the team took down Coffee 6-5 in the Class 3A state championship.

Current Northwest coach Jason Brooker said all of the coaches and at least some of the players from the 1987 squad will be in attendance.

“They are getting the word out and have something on Facebook,” he said.

The idea was his own. He thought back to five years ago when the team was honored for the 20th anniversary and wanted to give some more spotlight.

“I was just thinking back about the teams that won the state,” Brooker said. “The team also won it in 1993, which next year will be 20 years. We might do something with them next year.”

The team possibly could add some inspiration to the current team, which is off to a 17-2 start and also has a state championship on its mind. Both Northwest and Dalton teams are coming off strong weekends. The Lady Cats have some confidence after finishing third in Adairsville’s Tiger Town Classic, and Northwest finished second in the Cherokee County Invitational at Twins Creek Park in Woodstock.

Here is a look at what else is going on this week.

n Don’t forget about the other softball action this week, including Southeast Whitfield’s home matchup Tuesday at 5:55 p.m. against Sub-region 7B-4A foe Ridgeland.

The Lady Raiders will have a Breast Cancer Awareness game, coach Kelley Barton said.

n Area volleyball action begins this week for many teams, with the big game happening Tuesday at Southeast where the Lady Raiders, Lady Cats and Lady Bruins will compete in an Area 7-4A tri-match. The start is scheduled for 5 p.m. Coahulla Creek also will host a tri-match starting at 5 p.m. against Fannin County and Sonoraville.

On Thursday Christian Heritage will host the Lady Colts and North Cobb Christian in a tri-match starting at 5 p.m. The Lady Lions had a great weekend, finishing second in the Volley at the Creek tournament at Coahulla Creek.

n Northwest Whitfield and Dalton cross country will compete in the second meet of the Chattanooga Cross Country League, this one taking place Tuesday at Woodland Park Baptist beginning at 5 p.m. Murray County will be hosting a meet Thursday at Fort Mountain beginning at 4:15 p.m. Morris Innovative is one of the teams who will compete, along with Calhoun and Fannin.
