A Look Ahead: Dolphins battle up current

The Dalton Dolphins know how many points they need to win by, and the regular season title will come down to three dozen. More than 36, and the tiebreaker is theirs, along with the straight shot to a third consecutive regular season title

The summer league swim team faces its top rival, Signal Mountain, today at 5:30 p.m. at the Dalton Parks and Recreation Department’s John Davis Recreation Center for a chance to avenge an earlier loss in this year’s Chattanooga Area Swim League Season.

The two teams faced each other June 13 in Signal Mountain, and the Dolphins (5-1) fell 399-363. That means the team must win by a larger difference to possess the tiebreaker for the blue division championship with just one meet remaining — next Monday versus Stuart Heights — in the regular season. If the Dolphins win both meets, finishing with a 7-1 record, they are assured no worse than a tie for first with Signal Mountain. The first tiebreaker when teams have identical records is head-to-head record. The second tiebreaker is head-to-head point differential.

“So I have to round everyone up and make sure we have a strong showing,” Dolphins coach Charles Todd said.

Signal Mountain is undefeated so far through six meets.

After the season ends, there will be a city meet held July 12 and 13 at Baylor School in Chattanooga.

Last season, the Dolphins won the regular season title in similar fashion, splitting the season series with Stuart Heights but winning by a larger difference. It was the Dolphins’ second consecutive regular season title and fifth in eight years. The Dolphins then won the city meet for the second time.

The two teams’ rivalry is established and includes a dominating give-and-take atop the CASL Blue Division standings. Since 2003, the Dolphins have won regular-season titles in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2011 and 2012 while Signal Mountain won in 2003, 2004, 2008, 2009 and 2010. In the same stretch, the Dolphins have just one City Meet title (2006 and 2012), while Signal Mountain has won it each other year.
