Lusk Memorial golf tourney set for next week

The 2014 Dr. Earl W. Lusk Memorial Rotary Golf Tournament is scheduled for Tuesday at Dalton Golf and Country Club and will support the many college scholarships that Rotary provides to high school seniors each spring.

The tournament remembers Lusk, who was an active Rotarian for many years, holding many jobs in the organization and becoming a Paul Harris Fellow. Prior to Rotary, Lusk was also a member of Jaycees and the Exchange Club.

Lusk, who was from Tennessee, graduated from City High School in Chattanooga in 1954. He graduated from Southern College of Optometry in Memphis, Tenn., and held optometry licenses in Georgia and Tennessee.

He began a practice with Dr. Thomas Hogshead in 1960, served as president of the Georgia Optometric Association, the chairman of the Board of Trustees for Southern College of Optometry and held various committee chairs for the Southeastern Optometric Association.

In Dalton, Lusk served as the president of Dalton Golf and Country Club, was a charter member of The Farm Golf Club and was an avid golfer and fisherman.

In the prime of his life, he was stricken with pancreatic cancer and died in 1992. His wife Carole and  her current husband, Doug Hoskins, have been mainstays of this tournament for many years, helping Rotary to maintain the high scholarship levels for recipients.

The tournament still has openings for players and teams. To register, please contact Hoskins at (706) 260-5011 or or Mitch Sanford at (706) 226-5377 or

The entry fee is $125 per player or $500 for a four-person team, which includes green fees, a buffet lunch, range balls, on-course beverages and snacks, awards and prizes.
